Ancillary Text Planning

CD Covers

Throughout my filming for my alternative rock music video, I will take photographs of my main talent, locations and etc for my ancillary texts that being an album cover and a magazine advertisement.
These four images I have found on 'Google images' are prime examples of CD album covers.
Therefore, I will either have to take a photograph of a band, or an aspect of the music video. I think, to one, save time, and to make editing easier, I will take my photographs of my main talent in my music video when filming.
I will be creating a CD cover and music advert in Photoshop as I am very familiar with the software and how it works from using it solid in AS media when I was making my music magazine.

The Beyonce Cover isn't the same as my music genre, however I think the costume and composition of the text behind her is a good idea. I could also do some artwork involved with am image like the led zepplein picture however I'd mix a picture of Jodee (my main talent) and paint on top of parts of it to looks abstract and artistic.

These are some ideas I have produced with my test shot of Katie to get an idea of what I wish to produce for a CD cover.

When I come to producing my final outcome, I will be using my main talent Jodee in the studio wearing the black costume which she will be wearing in my studio filming.
By doing this I will allow continuity to flow from my music video to my final product and ancillary media texts.

In CD's the continuity flows from the front cover, inside and to the back of the CD cover. Looking at existing products found around my house of the same genre, you can see how these products use the  same fonts throughout and same colour scheme. This is easy to distinguish from my work in AS on music magazines and understanding what the key connotations are which create realism to the magazine.

These are some ideas which for what I would like my ancillary texts to look like.

I really like the R for Rihanna's CD cover. I think it is discrete, and a good idea for my chosen genre and look I'm going for. This is used with two photographs and I want to use photographs and paint in my ancillary texts like the example of mine above.

I began to look at different text fonts as I thought I could either hand draw, or look online for some ideas. I went on a website called Daft font. I typed in 'Rebels' (as I couldn't think of any other name for the artist) and clicked on the category "horror" for my chosen genre/look I want to create.

I really like the second row down. The R reminds me of Rihannas CD cover, but as the, music genre is different to Rihanna's genre of music, I dont think my audience will relate the two together. As this is just planning, I don't think my final outcome will be as I have planned to begin with as I found out In AS with my music magazine; The first draft looks nothing like my final outcome.

The photographs below are of a most recent album from Foo Fighters. This is showing the layout and photographs used which have inspired my to use a medium of photography rather than all computerised text.

From looking at the Foo Fighters CD pack. I thought I would pick random CD's from around the house and photograph them for my research to show that the conventions of different artists are the same.

They all contain artist name on the front and album name even though they all look different due to the composition of the text and image/artwork used.

All artwork/design on the CD's themselves all vary in style however the conventions tend to be again the artists name, album name and sometimes the tracks are numerically listed on the CD too.

The back fo the CD's however are all very different apart from the use of the tracks numerically listed. I would like to be creative and be rather analog in my approach using artwork with possibly an image. As I am just researching at the moment, I will be thinking my plans/ideas through properly at a later date.

Now what about posters?

Posters tend to be similar to the album cover, however; the content on the poster depends on what the poster is used for.... For example, promotion of a CD or the appearance of the musician at a concert. My poster will be to promote the artists new album.

I got this image from Google images and I will be using this to help plan my product. This will be useful as it will allow me to make prints to fit the dimensions given so that I will reduce the cost of printing as I'm hoping to get the dimensions right first time round.

These photographs of different types of CD casings are the style I wish to create. I Think the top photograph would be eye catching to my target audience with a colourful print or photograph on the CD shown through the whole.

The one below is a good idea as I like the use of stitching along the edge of the CD cover however, I would need to layer up dark prints onto it to allow the case to stand out like this below for example.

I like the colour and idea of a fold in the casing. I think this will be better for my product to draw attention to my target audience by having more intriguing photographs and/or colourful textures.

The photographs in the prezi file above are what have am using for my inspiration. I really like the photograph in the middle of my photo collage as I believe it will allow continuity from my music video to my CD cover and music magazine advertisement.

Another Idea i've had is to experiment with a skull outline and draw on it. Here are some examples, I'm not sure where I would place it however I have an Idea of where I could - music magazine advertisement.

This photograph below is my take on the drawing above. I used a photograph of Katie from my photography as a tester to see how difficult it is to create. When I produce my final outcome if I use this idea will be used with a photograph of Jodee.
